Ask any Indian grandmother about oily skin and the answer is the same: multani mitti. Fuller's earth has been mixed with rose water and spread on faces for generations. A multani mitti soap puts that ritual into a bar you can use every day, in thirty seconds instead of thirty minutes.
What is multani mitti?
Multani mitti is a fine, soft mineral clay — fuller's earth — named after Multan, where it was once traded across the subcontinent. It is famously absorbent, which is the whole secret of why it works on oily skin. Read more in our multani mitti guide.
What multani mitti does in a soap
- Soaks up excess oil — the clay holds on to sebum and lifts it away with the lather.
- Lifts everyday grime — sweat, dust and pollution that settle into oily skin rinse away with it.
- Leaves a matte, fresh finish — skin feels clean without the waxy film some soaps leave.
Who it suits
Multani mitti soap is best for oily and combination skin, skin that gets congested, and anyone in hot, humid weather — which, for most of India, is much of the year. It's also a good body soap after sport or a long, sweaty commute.
Multani mitti soap vs a multani mitti face pack
A face pack sits on your skin for 10–15 minutes and dries; a soap is on for under a minute and rinses off. The pack is a weekly deep treatment; the soap is a daily habit. Many people use both: the soap every day, the pack once a week.
How to use multani mitti soap
- Wet your face with lukewarm water.
- Rub the bar between wet palms to make a lather — don't drag the bar across your face.
- Massage the lather in for 20–30 seconds, focusing on the T-zone.
- Rinse well, pat dry, and use a light moisturiser.
Why rose goes with it
Clay on its own can leave skin feeling tight. Rose has been clay's partner in Indian beauty for centuries because it keeps the finish soft and calm, so look for a clay bar with something softening in it.
Do we make one?
Not yet. Our bars right now are Coffee & Kojic Acid and Neem, Aloe & Vitamin E. For oily skin, both have rice powder to help soak up excess oil.

Questions people ask
Can I use multani mitti soap every day?
Yes, if your skin is oily or combination. With dry skin, use it a few times a week.
Is multani mitti soap good for pimples?
It helps keep oily, breakout-prone skin clean by soaking up excess oil. It doesn't treat acne — see a dermatologist for persistent breakouts.
Does multani mitti soap lighten skin?
No. It cleans and leaves skin looking fresher and less shiny; it doesn't change your natural skin tone.
