The best soap for oily skin: what actually helps (and what doesn't)
How to choose a soap for oily skin that controls shine without stripping: the ingredients that help, the habits that backfire, and a simple routine.

If your face shines by lunchtime, your make-up slides and your pores look bigger than you'd like, you have oily skin — and you've probably been told to wash it more, with something stronger. That advice is half right. The right soap matters a lot; the strongest soap is usually the wrong one.
Why harsh soap makes oily skin worse
Oily skin makes more sebum than it needs. Strip it all away with a harsh, high-foaming detergent and the skin feels squeaky clean for an hour — then tight and dehydrated, and it often answers by making even more oil. The goal isn't zero oil. It's less excess oil, without the tightness.
What to look for in a soap for oily skin
- Neem — neem is the traditional choice for oily skin that also gets congested.
- Rice powder — a fine powder that helps soak up excess oil while you wash.
- A fine scrub — ground coffee or walnut gently polishes away the rough, dull surface that oil and dust leave behind.
- A mild base — a gentle goat milk glycerin base that cleans without leaving the skin tight.

The habits that matter as much as the soap
- Wash twice a day — morning and night — and after heavy sweating. Not five times.
- Use lukewarm water. Hot water strips skin; cold water doesn't clean well.
- Lather in your hands first, then massage for 20–30 seconds. Let the lather do the work; don't scrub.
- Moisturise anyway, with something light and oil-free. Hydrated skin is less likely to overproduce oil.
- Wear sunscreen in the day — a gel or matte one if heavy creams feel greasy.
Face and body
Oily skin is often oily on the chest and back too, which is where breakouts like to hide. The same bar works for both — our bars are made for face and body. Use a clean towel each time for your face.
Which Panchrasa bar to choose
If your skin sweats and gets oily, start with Neem, Aloe & Vitamin E. If your oily skin also looks dull, or you spend your day in traffic and pollution, try Coffee & Kojic Acid. You'll find both on our soap for oily skin page.
Questions people ask
Is soap bad for oily skin?
Not a gentle one. Harsh detergent soaps that leave skin squeaky and tight can make oily skin worse; a mild bar with ingredients like neem or rice powder suits many people with oily skin.
Which soap is best for oily skin in summer?
A mild bar with neem or rice powder, used twice a day with lukewarm water, followed by a light oil-free moisturiser and sunscreen.
Can I use the same soap for oily face and body?
Yes, if it's made for face and body. Patch test first if your face is more sensitive than your body.
Not sure which bar is yours?
Mix two or three in a custom combo box and let your skin decide.
