Handmade soap vs regular soap: what's actually different
How handmade soap differs from supermarket soap — glycerin, ingredients, batch size and feel — and how to tell a good handmade bar from a pretty one.

Handmade soap costs more than a supermarket bar. So what are you paying for — and is it worth it? Here's an honest look at the differences that matter, and the ones that don't.
Glycerin stays in
Glycerin is a natural moisturiser that forms when soap is made. Large factories often take it out and sell it separately. Handmade bars usually keep it, which is a big part of why many people find them less drying.
Real ingredients you can see
In a handmade bar the ingredients are usually right there — clay that colours the bar, coffee grounds you can feel, specks of herbs. Supermarket soaps more often rely on colourants and fragrance to suggest an ingredient that's only present in a tiny amount.
Small batches
Handmade soap is made a few dozen bars at a time, so each batch can be checked, and recipes can use ingredients that don't suit huge machines — like a two-layer coffee bar poured by hand.

What doesn't make soap better
- Pretty colours and swirls — lovely, but they say nothing about how the bar treats your skin.
- "Chemical-free" — everything is made of chemicals, including water and neem. Look for clear ingredient lists instead.
- Big promises — no soap cures acne, removes wrinkles or changes your natural skin tone.
How to make a handmade bar last
- Keep it on a draining soap dish, never sitting in water.
- Store spare bars in a cool, dry cupboard.
- Cut a bar in half and use one piece at a time if your bathroom stays steamy.
Questions people ask
Is handmade soap good for sensitive skin?
Often, because good handmade bars are mild and keep their glycerin. Choose one with little or no fragrance and patch test.
Why is handmade soap more expensive?
Smaller batches, more expensive ingredients like butters, clays and real coffee, and the hand work of pouring, unmoulding and wrapping each bar.
How long does a handmade soap bar last?
Kept dry on a draining dish, a 100 g bar usually lasts several weeks of daily use.
Not sure which bar is yours?
Mix two or three in a custom combo box and let your skin decide.
